Abstract:

Private papers of Rear Admiral Shubrick primarily concerning the Mexican-American War and his tour as commander of the Pacific Squadron. Materials include a ledger of memoranda of his time in the Pacific Squadron, correspondence from his wife and daugher, a letter copybook, speeches, religous meditations, memorandums, and other misellaneous documents and letters. Materials of note include a letter of introduction for W. Alesi Botts signed by [President] John Tyler, and a memorandum by Shubrick outlining the conditions to be met for the freeing of his slave, Emeline. Others include a letter from his son-in-law, George Clymer, Jr. denouncing the war with Mexico, and documents outlining Shubrick's naval career. Also contains a full scale drawing of the sword and scabbard presented to Shubrick by the state of South Carolina, a letter from the Secretary of State of South Carolina with an accompanying description of the sword details, a sheet containing several detailed drawings of ship hull structural components (1/2 inch scale), and a few specimens of pressed flowers marked with the date they were collected in California.

William Branford Shubrick (October 31, 1790-May 27,1874) was an officer in the United States Navy. His active-duty career extended from 1806 to 1861 including service in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. In December 1861, Shubrick was retired and promoted to Rear Admiral on the retired list on July 16, 1862.
